The Peppermint House, or Living On Solared Time

I've been going to school for a long, long time. Ever since I was four years old, that makes it 23 years. So I've had a lot of first days at school. But this year I had a first day at a NEW school. I've only had 7 of those: preschool #1 taught by Mrs. Rhodes, preschool #2 the Peppermint House preschool, Shelley Elementary, American Fork Junior High, American Fork High School, the University of Utah, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and now #8: Rice University. It seems somewhat surreal to me that from here on out I will be primarily identified with Rice, why not the Peppermint Place? Maybe I should insist that they list Peppermint in my bio on english.rice.edu.

Also, I got a new wristwatch. And it's really quite strange how much I love it.

Are you a bad person if...

...you use the phrase, "point of order"?
Just checking.

Votes, please...

I need to submit a photo for the department webpage. So, of course, I've spent the morning taking pictures of myself. Which one should I use?

As I look through these I notice that I'm not smiling with my teeth in any of them. That's probably for the best: baring the teeth is a sign of aggression in English departments.

Summer Song

by William Carlos Williams

Wanderer moon
smiling a
faintly ironical smile
at this
brilliant, dew-moistened
summer morning,—
a detached
sleepily indifferent
smile, a
wanderer's smile,—
if I should
buy a shirt
your color and
put on a necktie
sky-blue
where would they carry me?
